Splash of Color

One of the biggest goals I had set for myself for my time off was to plant flowers in our yard. I had only planned to buy a few perennials and then a lot of petunias (because they were nice and cheap), but I took Kevin to Lowes with me and we ended up with a bunch of perennials and a few petunias. Oh well, I guess it is less work for me. Plus, I decided to resurrect my tomato growing skills, so I bought two plants and planted them in pots (I haven’t clear a spot in the back yard for them yet.). I also stuck our survivalist hanging pot of petunias and four pots of herbs (leftovers from a Young Women’s activity) outside with them.

Here are the pictures of my labors. Plus a pictures of the view from our front yard, which I love. Please excuse the wilting glowers. I’ve found it happens when you plant them, but I have been working extra hard to make sure they have plenty to drink. The third and fourth to the last pictures are of a couple of plants that have survived since the previous owners. I have done nothing over there yet. The weed problem is ever present, but I have made quite a bit of progress this year, and I am ahead of where I was last year at this time.

Kennecott Copper Mine

Despite the fact that I have spent the last 26 and a half years in Utah, I have as yet to visit the Kennecott Copper Mine, so last Saturday (June 11), Kevin and I decided to rectify that. We met up with our friends Kate and Alex and drove up to the visitor’s center. I do have to say that the hole where the mine is being drilled is quite impressive. I always knew the mine was big, but I didn’t realize how big until I was able to see it in person and up close. 

Being the dork that I am, I also found the exhibits in the visitor’s center and the movie they showed to be quite informative and interesting. I enjoyed learning about the process that it takes to transform the copper from an ugly rock to a nice shiny metal.
