English Lessons

When Kevin was serving in Lithuania, the missionaries taught English lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Although it had been 5 or 6 years since he had left, he was pretty confident that English lessons would still be taught that day. I think he mostly wanted to make a last ditch effort to meet up with someone (or even anyone) that he knew from his missionary days.

We rode the bus over there and arrived a little bit before 7 (the usual time for the classes). The gate to the church was unlocked, which was promising. Even more promising, the door of the church was open. However, when we got there, the place was deserted, but we could hear an English movie playing in one of the classrooms. At first we were confused, but then we realized that it was the sister missionaries with an investigator. Kevin gave me an abbreviated tour of the chapel and cultural hall. It looked like a Utah church, except much smaller and with chairs instead of benches in the chapel.

We decided to keep waiting and took a seat on the couch. Eventually the sisters concluded their appointment and came out to greet us. Kevin greeted them by conversing in Lithuania and asking about English classes. The sisters were unable to figure out our true identity until Kevin told them my name. There are not too many Lithuania Megans. At that point they realized that Kevin was playing a joke on them, and asked where we were from. Kevin then talked to them in English, so I could follow. One of the sisters was from Holladay. I don't think the other one told us where she was from.

Kevin asked them about members and old investigators, and I think he enjoyed the opportunity to kind of catch up with the people he had grown to love while he spent 10 months here. It wasn't as good as going to Church, but I think he appreciated him. He asked them about a couple he had taught and grown close with, and we found they still lived in the same apartment. After bidding the sisters a good-bye, we headed off in that direction.
